Last month I promised information regarding the cargoes exported from Bideford and I have received the following information from the shippers at Peters Marland.
‘
‘The majority of clays from Devon are now exported around the world to countries including
Turkey, Egypt, Iran, Syria, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Russia , Italy, Spain, Germany, Nordic Countries
North Devon works have about 2/3 ships per month, these carry about 2000/3000 tons per vessel. Ball clays are used primarily in the production of sanitary ware but also used in tableware tiles glazes and bricks. The majority of our kaolin (china clay) is used in the production of paper, where it is used as a filler in the bulk of the paper and to coat its surface. Kaolin is also used in the production of ceramics, paints, plastics and rubber. ‘
