FRIENDS OF THE KATHLEEN & MAY

HOME

Kathleen and May
The schooner is currently undergoing some major preservation work. Unlike other similar vintage wooden sailing ships, the K and M is being worked much as she would have been during her trading years. Not a sterile merchant ship but a living and working example of a merchant trading ship. The keen observer might have noticed that the three topmasts are missing together with some spars and rigging. These parts have been taken down for inspection and repair. The spars are cleaned back to bare wood , damaged or unsound timber is cut away and replaced with new. Having been soaked in linseed oil, they are now being given up to eight coats of high quality varnish.
Over the nest few weeks the lower masts and bowsprit will come out for similar treatments. If you woud like to be involved, we would be delighted to hear from you The reward will be knowing you have helped to keep a prominent piece of local maritime history in sailing condition.
