Lundy Island Gig Race
An annual gig race from Clovelly around Lundy Island and back. Cornish pilot gigs were designed  to carry pilots out to ships inbound to the ports around the South West.  The first one alongside got the job, so speed and seaworthiness were critical.  The modern gig is still built to the same specifications. This is not racing in calm estuarine waters, but ocean racing, battling against wave after wave in what is, after all, nothing more than a large rowing boat. There are only about 140 active gigs in the world. For more information on gigs, please see

July 19th Foods for Vitality Lisa Sture

This will be a fun day of eating without heating - juicing, blending,
sprouting and dehydrating! An introduction to the joy and wisdom of
eating superfoods, raw foods and living foods and the surprising benefits
to be gained.

The course is run by Lisa Sture who has been eating higher percentages
of raw food for 7 years and went 100% raw just over 1 year ago. She had
been suffering from incredible stiffness in the mornings, lack of energy
and poor memory - all of which have disappeared or dramatically
improved. She has also lost over 35lbs in weight!

August 9th Introduction to Family History research

Patrick Kivlin, an experienced teacher and genealogist,
will go through the various types of record that are used in the research of
a family history. This will cover Civil Registration of Births, Marriages
and Deaths, census records, church records, wills and probate, estate,
military and other records. Although some experience of family history or of
internet use would be helpful it is not essential and the day should be
suitable for all levels of expertise. It would also be helpful if you can
bring any information that you have about your family history as it will
then be possible to suggest new approaches.

Patrick has been tracing his own family for many years and has been teaching
family history for the past ten years, during which time there has been a
huge rise in internet resources available to the genealogist. He also works
as a profession genealogist and has clients around the world for whom he
works in the record offices of the south west.

August 23rd Life Story Writing Pam Hogan
Share Your Memories

Everyone has a story to tell. What's yours?

Do you enjoy recalling the events of your life; the people you've met, the
places you've been, the experiences you've had? Recording your life
story is a great way of reliving your past and of creating a unique
heirloom for friends and family to treasure and enjoy.

Like most of us, you probably have boxes or drawers overflowing with
letters, diaries, photos, cards and other snippets, all recalling memorable
times. Added to the anecdotes you enjoy sharing, you already have more
than enough to tell your story. No-one has seen life through your eyes;
your story is quite unique – don't let it be lost.

Through your life story you can speak to your children, grandchildren and
great grandchildren, passing on a picture of your life and the person you
are, offering them a sense of continuity and belonging. How would you
feel if you came across your great grandmother's journal in the attic? The
likelihood is that you would find even the most mundane details of her
daily life absolutely fascinating.
You may have already thought of writing your life story but not known
where to start, what to include or how to bring your story to life. If you can
put pen to paper, use a keyboard or speak into a tape recorder you can
get started straight away.

On a life story writing day you will:

– share your memories with others
– identify the unique storylines of your life
– understand the simple rules of storytelling
– find a structure for your life story
– and begin to write

Maybe your title will be 'A Shared Life,' recalling the people you have met
along the way. Or perhaps 'The Way We Were,' painting a picture of a
particular time. Maybe your focus will be on your working life, family life,
single life, traveling life, caring life – or all of these! One thing is certain: it
will be a unique and fascinating personal record.

By the end of the year you could have your own personal and
social history ready to give as the most unique Christmas present
your family and friends will ever receive.
