Summer Protection
I would like to remind local residents about the
importance of home security during the summer months. Beware of the opportunist
burglar! Not only should we take security measures for when we plan to go on our
summer holidays but also when we are spending time at home or in the garden.
The majority of the burglaries that take place in North Devon are down to the
fact that front doors, back doors and windows have been left open. People tend
to do this more often now that the warmer weather is approaching. If you are
just going to the corner shop or even to the bottom of the garden, be sure that
your home is secure. It only takes a matter of seconds to open your door and
grab cash, a purse, handbag, mobile phone or the keys to your car!
If you are going away on holiday make sure that you leave no indications that
the house is empty. Don’t forget to cancel milk and papers. The use of timers to
turn lights and radios on and off are very good at giving the impression that
there is someone there.
The best way to protect you and your property from becoming a victim of burglary
is to have a burglar alarm installed by a company recognised by NACOSS, SSAIB or
NSI. It is proven that a professionally installed system drastically reduces
your chances of being burgled.
Please remember to protect your home whilst still enjoying the summer weather.
Crime throughout Northern Devon remains very low ; we must remember that we live
in one of the safest parts of the country.

obituaries page and if I'm not there I carry on as usual."

The following story comes courtesy of the Devon County Council website
A 72-year-old granny crossed over the Himalayan border checkpoint not using her
passport, but her pensioner’s bus pass. Helen Carter from Churchstow, South
Devon was on an organised group trip to the region and had left her passport at
her hotel. But the Devon-wide travel pass that usually gives her free travel on
trips to less exotic places such as Plymouth and Totnes, came to her rescue and
allowed her to cross between India and Nepal four times. “When I showed the pass
the border guard smiled and waved me through.'

District Council is keen to ensure that its customers receive the benefit they
are entitled to. If you are on low income and pay rent to a landlord or Council

your time completing a form. We offer the opportunity to talk with an
experienced officer, who can calculate a provisional assessment, and if we think
you may qualify for some help, will then assist you in the next stage of
applying for benefit.
All you have to do is pick up the
phone and give the Council a call.
Don’t miss out – It is your
entitlement!
Phone 01237 428700, tell the
receptionist your surname and you will be put through to expert assistance. All
you have to do is ask if you will qualify. Officers will discuss your
circumstances with you and advise you further. Alternatively you can e-mail the
Council at
